You’ll do more than the expected. You’ll do the unexpected.

As a Junior UX Researcher, you will help designers, product managers, and engineers learn from our users and about their needs. You will have the opportunity to learn from senior researchers across a broad array of studies and methods, as well as to design and lead your own studies. Additionally, you will be a member of the team supporting the strategy, design, and delivery of the Amex Mobile App, which is available on iOS and Android in 20 markets around the world and used by millions of customers each month.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Keeping all parties informed throughout the research process and tailor your communication style based on your audience, this can be through email or Slack or in person or video call
  • Collaborate effectively with teams (product managers, designers, UX writers, researchers, design ops, research ops, and external research partners) to articulate the research needs, coordinate session observations, session debriefs, and sharing research insights
  • Bringing ideas fearlessly to the table as we are a growing team and always looking for ways to improve our practice of research

What might an ordinary week look like?

  • Handling research SessionOps for a study you are assisting on. SessionOps can include sending calendar invites, creating collaborative whiteboard spaces for observers, connecting with research vendors on logistics, and creating and/or monitoring a dedicated Slack channel
  • Outlining the flow and specific tasks for an unmoderated study that you are running on your own
  • Having a 1:1 with your leader and holding coffee chats to get to know your design, UX writing, and product colleagues
  • Drafting monthly communication to share Mobile App research findings and insights related to the Mobile App with a wider audience
  • Brainstorming with your leader on activities to use in an upcoming workshop designed to make insights actionable
  • Catalog insights and artifacts from a study completed last week in the research library

Offer of employment with American Express is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background verification check, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with evaluative methods (like usability testing), having tried out session moderation, and collaborated with or supported other researchers on a variety of studies
  • Previous work includes moderated and unmoderated testing, participant recruiting, scheduling and coordination, notetaking during user interviews, coordinating observers, and structuring or even leading debriefs with observers and other researchers after sessions
  • Experience supporting design or product teams in using research to make tactical decisions about features or designs
  • At least a year of hands-on experience in research and through practical experience in industry or academia, on-the-job training, or formal education, and learning how to use research to deliver rigorous results that teams can use
  • Curiosity, humility, and an openness to learning new things
