The Principal User Researcher at Autodesk is a customer advocate, possesses a passion for human-centered design, and has a track record of initiating, leading, and executing on highly impactful research with cross-functional teams. Our Researchers leverage a wide variety of research methods and work in lockstep with their teams.  Through the development of strong partnerships, with strategic leaders and peers alike, the Principal User Researcher can identify insights that drive business goals and influence product priorities and roadmaps.The Principal User Researcher for Fusion 360 is seen as an expert and mentor and will work as part of a newly formed User Research Strategy team in Portland, OR.  Through formative research to understand customer workflows holistically, synthesizing that research into clear and actionable goals, this person will directly impact the creation of cohesive and scalable customer experiences in a variety of Fusion 360 products and services. As the strategy and product development progresses the researcher will work closely with their XD and PM partners to continuously validate deliverables to ensure we bring the right solutions to market.Responsibilities

  • Proactively planning and executing customer research throughout the strategy, design and development lifecycle, from early strategic direction through post-release validation
  • Employing a wide range of research methods, including design research and contextual inquiry, participatory design workshops, interviews, formative and summative usability studies, and quantitative methods, such as surveys and data analytics
  • Developing relationships across the company to collect existing research and insights to inform research questions, and collaborate on end-to-end research that looks across the customer journey
  • Leading in-person empathy and design-thinking workshops with cross-functional teams to ensure that findings and insights are translated into actionable product goals and direction
  • Leading in-person empathy and design-thinking workshops with customers, at key Fusion 360 events or customer work sites, to ensure we’re solving the right problems
  • Sharing customer insights with the broader organization in creative ways to increase customer empathy, including posters, immersion rooms, blog posts, and workshops
  • Coaching and mentoring others in the research community at Autodesk, and evangelizing research as a strategic driver for our products and services
  • Leading conversations that drive consensus with high-level stakeholders, both in-person and virtual
  • Engagement in the forums and in customer communities to collect feedback
  • Blogging or forum posts closing the loop with our users
  • Maintaining a catalog of user information and insights
  • Quarterly travel, both domestic and international

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional research experience
  • Top-notch research skills and a strong track record of qualitative and quantitative results that impact business metrics, product strategy and development
  • Up-to-date toolkit of research methods, and the experience and savvy to know when to be lean and scrappy and when to be rigorous
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide set of stakeholders including designers, product managers, and software developers
  • Ability to execute in a fast-paced, agile environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas to their essence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in cognitive or experimental psychology, human computer interaction, human factors, or related field
  • Experience working with CAD, CAM or PLM products and services
  • Experience researching multichannel experiences
  • Experience with agile software development
  • Experience with Autodesk products
