The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Design Research leader with a focus on qualitative methods to join our User Experience team and drive research efforts and operations in the organization.

As a Principal UX Researcher, you play a critical role in guiding our work at Boomi, from Discovery through Implementation. You’ll lead the discovery process to ensure that we’re defining and prioritizing features of value, and assess and measure usability to identify areas of improvement. This is a unique opportunity to build and shape our emerging research niche within a highly-valued UX team, as we expand our research strategy and its role in the Agile development cycle.

This team is seeking someone with unique skills and qualities, to add to the diversity of our group. We want someone who shares a knack for analyzing and understanding user needs and expectations, in order to effectively advocate for them. We need someone who sees opportunity in undefined, sometimes nebulous spaces.

We want someone who takes initiative and feedback equally well. You’ll be working side-by-side with your UX Design peers to drive research activities that provide the evidence and data they need to design desirable, valuable outcomes. You’ll be working closely with Product Owners, to inform and influence product strategy through research. We’re a fluid, collaborative product team: you’ll also be working closely with Quality Engineers, Developers, Technical Writers, and Program Managers. Additionally, you’ll be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with the users of our platform: both internal users, and external customers.

We are currently a fully-remote company, due to COVID-19, and will remain a remote-friendly company once we can safely return to site. We are headquartered in Chesterbrook, PA, and have product teams colocated, in Philadelphia PA, Cambridge MA, and Exeter UK offices — when it’s safe to do so, occasional travel will be required (<10% travel). Our product offices are relaxed environments with intelligent, supportive colleagues, brightly colored walls, and lots of whiteboard surfaces.

This role reports to the Senior Manager of User Experience.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Defining and advocating UX Research best practices and processes to support our team’s success
  • Broad knowledge of qualitative research methods and deep expertise in their application
  • Learning complex technological concepts, and then communicating them in plain language
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement, and validating their impact through discovery and research methods
  • Building and maintaining UX Research roadmaps that influence product strategy through close partnership with Product Owners
  • Leading and executing the UX research activities to align with and inform our business objectives, and providing oversight and guidance to others who assist these activities
  • Designing and conducting usability tests, among other UX research methods
  • Analyzing and presenting findings to internal stakeholders, such as Product Managers and the Executive Leadership, and crafting strategic recommendations to drive desired outcomes
  • Creating and maintaining user personas and use cases
  • Thinking both conceptually and pragmatically about product strategy to ensure that Boomi remains an industry leader

This position requires:

  • Experience facilitating design workshops and requirements-gathering research: in-person and remote
  • Occasional travel spanning 2-5 days (<10% travel)
  • Flexibility and adaptability: you must be comfortable with ‘just enough research’ and be able to operate within an agile environment
  • Exceptional written & verbal communication skills
  • The desire to collaborate, with the ability to operate independently
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Strong business acumen and a considered, clearly-articulated research philosophy
  • Examples of your work: a portfolio, website, or dropbox of case studies and outcomes

Preferred skills:

  • Experience defining research strategy at the program level
  • Visual thinkers with an affinity for the whiteboard
  • A history of leading teams, and a desire to mentor others
  • The ability to lead multidisciplinary teams balanced with the ability to be a supportive, collaborative teammate
  • Experience working in Agile environments
  • Familiarity with collaborative and rapid prototyping tools (e.g., InVision, Miro, Aurelius)
  • Experience with online testing tools, such as Optimal Workshop
  • Comfort conducting usability testing outside of a lab
  • Understanding and familiarity with quantitative research
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 guidelines, and a value for conducting research to ensure inclusivity
  • Involvement in the UX community
