The Microsoft 365 Horizontals team is focused on ensuring consistent and seamless experiences for users working across the M365 ecosystem, regardless of the app they’re in. In this role, you will be responsible for bringing the user experience, market, and competitive insights to the teams delivering a range of experiences that persist within and across the Microsoft 365 portfolio. You’ll leverage your mixed methods skills as you take on complex and nuanced topics and work to define and drive near and long-term investments. You will work closely with other user researchers, planners, designers and program managers to ensure that we are addressing the most critical needs and opportunities.

We are seeking a strong User Researcher to join our multi-disciplinary team of over 65 user researchers and planners working on a breadth of experiences across Microsoft 365. Working on Microsoft 365 means influencing the experiences of 100s of millions of people using our services every day. Our team takes this influence seriously, and we are actively innovating our research practices to ensure inclusion and equity in our product making decisions. Our success in doing so is dependent on building and supporting teams that include people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, who can challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspective. Your experiences and your demonstrated skill sets are far more important than your level. If you are interested, please apply regardless of your years of experience.

We’re looking for someone who is forward-thinking and willing to challenge the status quo and help to define and incubate new ideas. This position requires strong research and organization skills, and the ability to work across teams. The ability to establish a strong point of view - informed by both market and user level insights - and to leverage your POV to define product direction is a must.

We’re especially looking for someone who wants to learn, grow, and embody new ways of working. If you embrace growth mindset, have a track record of delivering results, and you light up collaborating with other planners, researchers, designers, product managers and engineers, you’ll feel right at home on this awesome team.

Responsibilities

  • Create a research strategy that leverages existing data to complement the additional research that you need to execute. Key to this accountability will be identifying opportunities for growth, gaps and customer pain points, as well as potential customer delighters for the diversity of Microsoft audiences that include consumers, information workers, small business owners, and just about every other audience segment on the planet.
  • Define UX approaches, metrics, and work in an inclusive and transparent manner on research planning. This will include a need to innovate and develop new approaches to measure users’ experiences.
  • Identify stakeholders across Microsoft and bring them along as you provide qualitative and quantitative customer feedback to influence product development at different granularity, from product strategy to cross-platform coherence to feature usability.
  • Tackle problems that require an understanding of complex technical constraints across multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) while working to guide near and long-term investments. You should have the organizational agility and acumen to know when to push against product team resistance and when to fold constraints into your recommendations.
  • Work across organizational boundaries and across disciplines with UX Designers, other User Researchers, Data Science, Program Managers, and Engineers to ensure that we’re addressing the most critical business and technology objectives to meet the right user needs and opportunities.
  • Land impact broadly from your customer-focused knowledge by working across multiple organizations and their respective engineering, design and marketing teams.

Qualifications

What does it take?

Balance business motivations, value to Microsoft and external partners

  • You are eager to learn and understand about diverse audiences, their behaviors, context(s) and motivations - across all phases of the customer lifecycle and user journey
  • Can demonstrate strong empathy for these users while balancing the vision and constraints of stakeholders

Desire to work in-stride with other people:  PMs, designers, other researchers, marketers

  • Really, you must love this part of the job.  The lines between this role and others are often unclear and you must be comfortable with contributing, engaging others despite the ambiguity
  • Be ready to win together. This team has intentionally designed a structure where we work together.

Entrepreneurial spirit willing to dig in

  • You will need practical and real-world problem-solving skills, as this team moves fast, and your role will be to help unblock barriers in design, build and go-to-market

Other Requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on research and/or product planning experience, with demonstrated skill in collecting and analyzing human behavioral data to improve plans and UX in a technology industry setting
  • Either an MA/MS in computer science, statistics, human factors, psychology, market research or related field, or a BA/BS in one of these fields with significant industry experience

If the above sounds like you, we can’t wait to talk to you!
