Job description

We are looking for a Senior User Researcher, with the drive and passion to make a real difference to help build and help shape our society’s future.

This role links directly to our mission of being ‘Better Everyday’ and delivering ‘Service Excellence’ and our strategic priority to ‘Improve Transport for the User’.

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Deliver a programme of strategic work to increase the scale, impact and maturity of our user research
  • Embed a user-centred approach and best practice within the Digital, Information and Security Directorate and across DfT
  • Work with our Digital Business Partners to develop and manage relationships with senior stakeholders promoting and evidencing the benefit of user-centred approaches


Reporting to the Head of User research, the post holder’s responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting user research and analysis to create and iterate digital services and products for citizens and businesses. This will include planned portfolio work as well as high-priority and urgent requests for assistance
  • Producing and communicating actionable, evidence-based user insights and recommendations to inform business, technology and design decisions
  • Collaborating with colleagues to develop and embed personas and user experience journey maps within our strategic priority of ‘Improving Transport for the User’
  • Strengthening our research ops pillars including the establishing the use of an insight library and assuring the work of third parties
  • Establishing impact evaluation tools and processes to prove the benefit and return on investment of user research and a user centred approach
  • Championing inclusive and accessible research and design and advising others on their obligations in relation to accessibility regulations
  • Line managing and helping to build the capability of the more junior/ less experienced user researchers in the team. This will include guiding, influencing, and coaching them, ensuring a consistent approach
