Alexa Business Incubation (ABI) is a new team founded deliver on that vision. ABI will uncover the biggest areas of unmet need for Alexa to make a difference in the lives of our customers. ABI will be responsible for incubating new business ideas and determining which ideas are most worthy of investment. Comprised of a cross-functional team, ABI will assess existing segments of the broad economy (e.g., Finance, Travel, Real Estate) and investigate Alexa’s opportunities in those segments. ABI will also monitor emerging business segments (e.g., sharing economy companies, social audio, blockchain applications, AR/VR) to ensure Alexa is well positioned to serve these segments.

The Alexa Business Incubation team is looking for a visionary, forward-thinking user researcher to help us identify latent and emerging needs of our customers as we explore new possibilities for Alexa. Our research work includes generative, formative, and evaluative studies. It ranges from immersive field research to rigorous usability and lab studies, all of which help address research needs across all phases of design and product development.

You will be part of a cross-functional team responsible identifying opportunity areas for new Alexa businesses. This will include monitoring lifestyle trends for emerging needs, designing research studies and developing creative insight narratives to generate empathy for the customer.

About The Hiring Group

You will be the first, and initially only, researcher on a brand-new Alexa team. Working alongside an innovation leader, design technologist, financial analyst and a product manager, every member will be trusted to be a creative partner in this effort. There will be no junior members of this team - this is a highly specialized group task with bringing brand new businesses to Alexa and her customers.

Job responsibilities

  • Scan lifestyle trends, social trends and other indicators of potential unmet or latent consumer needs to identify opportunities for Alexa Business Incubation
  • Identify and prioritize research questions based on the analysis of existing solutions, customers’ needs, project goals, and risks
  • Employ the best research methods, including managing research agencies based on research questions, timelines, and resourcing
  • Ability to analyze and synthase various research streams to uncover actionable insights that drive Alexa new business development
  • Ability to drive research initiatives that range from qualitative and forward-looking to quantitative evaluation of current products
  • Communicate results and opportunities in clear, concise, and compelling ways to all levels of management
  • Write clearly and concisely, producing reports which are thorough and actionable

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Anthropology, Human Factors, Psychology, HCI/Computer Science or other related fields or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience conducting applied UX research in an industry setting
  • End-to-end experience conducting all aspects of research (study design, recruiting, moderation, analysis, reporting)
  • Experience applying user research methods including semi-structured interviews, field research, surveys, questionnaire design, diary studies, and usability studies
  • A portfolio demonstrating past work experience and deliverables
  • Experience working with stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into research questions and research designs
  • Experience working with and managing external vendors. Experiencing building and maintaining communities is a huge bonus!

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Human-computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or similar
  • Experience conducting research on voice-based experiences
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience conducting UX and market research in an applied industry setting
  • Experience with international research
  • Demonstrated success influencing product and design decisions with research insights
  • The ability to extract actionable insights from qualitative data
