About the job

SonarCloud is a SaaS application for code quality and code security. We help developers find bugs and vulnerabilities in their projects and give them a methodology on how to fix it.

Historically, SonarCloud inherits from the UX of SonarQube, our on-premise solution for code quality and code security. We’re now determined to make it a real cloud product with a user journey of its own, and thus we need SonarCloud to evolve to meet the standards of modern cloud services in terms of UX.

To achieve this, we need to form an understanding of our user's behaviors and needs. We want to make informed decisions when it comes to designing new features and fine-tune the experience so our product can seamlessly integrate with a developer’s workflow. This is why we’re looking for a self-starting, highly motivated UX Researcher to help us establish our research practices and capabilities.

The impact you can have

Until now, we’ve had generalist Product Designers who also conduct UX research. As part of our growth, we’re establishing roles for dedicated UX Researchers, and seek a pioneering contributor to be our first one. While this role will not be easy, it is a remarkable opportunity for a motivated individual to establish a UX research practice at scale. While we have ideas (integrate usability testing as a key part of the development workflow, and embracing generative practices), we’re looking for a leader to guide us.

SonarSource has product leadership that is hungry for the kinds of direction-informing insights that good research can bring. So, while there will be challenges in getting strong research practices off the ground, this role has advocates in high places.

This position will be appealing to someone ready to face big and exciting challenges. We need a best-in-class user experience to sustain rapid growth in user adoption and retention. You will play a key role in the team by identifying creative approaches and solutions to user research and help us build a desirable experience for SonarCloud users.

On a daily basis, you will

  • Establish UX research practices to inform, lead, and support the development of new features and the continuous improvement of existing ones.
  • Take lead and conduct in-depth research programs (such as usability testing, field studies, etc...)
  • Participate in building our analytics dashboards, and identify patterns in user behaviors based on quantitative data.
  • Enable product managers, designers, and developers to learn and apply research skills
  • Prioritize research effort on that which is truly important
  • Establish a repository of research findings and insights
  • Own and maintain our User Journey maps
  • Engage external contractors and services as necessary
  • Participate in defining the team and product objectives, challenge design decisions based on research-based evidence

  • The skills you will demonstrate

  • Significant professional experience practicing UX research
  • Comfortable to recommend platforms that can aid the research process.
  • Experience with generative and evaluative research methods but also analytics and quantitative data analysis
  • Experience integrating user research into product designs
  • Success at bringing a range of people into the research process
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, able to manage multiple competing priorities and work autonomously
  • Education skills, driven to spread understanding of user research methodologies
  • Comfortable with agile practices and principles
  • Lifelong learner, curious to explore new approaches

  • Nice to have

  • Complex enterprise software experience, and/or Developer tool industry experience
  • Basic knowledge of programming, understanding of our highly technical audience
  • Passion for Open-Source
  • A background in Product Design, with the ability to use design tools and methodologies

  • Please share with us case studies of your most meaningful work.

    Office location

SonarSource is a company with offices in Geneva (Switzerland) and Annecy (France) and Bochum (Germany). The role can be based in either of these offices, we are also open to the role being fully remote.

Why you will love it here

  • Safe work culture We value respect, kindness, and the right to fail.
  • Flexible hours We schedule our days in order to be effective at work, while also being able to enjoy life’s important moments.
  • Great people We value people skills as much as technical skills and strive to keep things friendly and laid back. Still, that does not prevent us to be passionate and leaders in our domains. Our 100+ SonarSourcers from 20 different nationalities can relate!
  • Work-life balance Keeping a healthy work-life balance is important. Which is why some people prefer working some days work from home.
  • Always keep learning In an ever-changing industry, learning new skills is a must, and we're happy to help our team to acquire them.

  • What we do

SonarSource was started by a team of developers that wanted to change the way code is built in an agile development process. The company was created to develop the open-source tool SonarQube, which is now the standard in code quality management with over 190,000 instances deployed today. Every day we are focused on solving developers’ next big problem.

    Who we are

At SonarSource we believe in people, excellence, and delivery. We’re a team of problem solvers and overachievers who seek out others who are also passionate and relentless in their respective missions. We want to work with people who are ready to fasten their seat belts and be part of an incredible ride. We work hard not because we’re told to, but because we genuinely love what we do and do what we love. If there’s one main message we want you to remember about us, it’s that we push others to be best in class at whatever they do: choose your battle, innovate, take risks, and lead change. Join us; we’ll be smarter and stronger together.
