The Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) team supports the definition, design, and development of continuously improving mobility services. SDV is a new vehicle intelligence platform that will underpin all our future innovations across a wide range of technological advancements, including EVs and expanded automated driving. This means that you can potentially put a fingerprint on the vehicles that drive down the road!

Our growing User Experience team is seeking a hard-working and passionate User Experience Researcher to support the creation of customer-facing designs within Digital Cockpit Experience team. As a User Experience Researcher, you will collaborate with designers, technologists, and business partners to craft meaningful experiences for our customers through thoughtful, data-informed design. The ideal candidate will have a proven foundation in design research methods, an understanding of and dedication to user-centered design, and have experience planning, facilitating, analyzing, and reporting research for digital products.

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite monthly.

Job Description

As a User Experience Researcher, you will support multi-disciplinary teams passionate about translating human needs into viable product concepts using iterative, human-centered design. Research work will impact the development of our Design System and cohesive cross-channel experiences for Cockpit Driving Experiences, Comfort, Safety, Ownership, Entertainment, Connectivity and Navigation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with teammates to plan and facilitate user and collaborator research that will guide the design of elite user experiences across all products and platforms for vehicle features
  • Analyze research findings to advise problem statements, guide design strategy, and define requirements
  • Facilitate workshops and collaborative activities with the team, partners, and users
  • Apply statistical skills for analyzing data collected
  • Provide inspiring reports and feedback on the implications to user experience and how improvements to the design and functionality of the system can be made
  • Build proposals on design direction supported by written and verbal presentations demonstrating ability to appropriately use both quantitative and qualitative data
  • Provide tactical and targeted design recommendations and next steps based on data
  • Advocate for accessibility in our designs where appropriate and/or required
  • Contribute to the continued evolution of the team’s workflows and processes to further improve research quality and performance

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years executing user research to inform interactive product design
  • Proficient in multiple user research methodologies (heuristic evaluation and expert reviews; usability 1:1 testing; contextual inquiry; surveys; card sorting and information architecture; focus groups; competitive evaluation)
  • Proficient in all aspects of usability testing (i.e., recruiting, methodology and metrics development, analysis, reporting results)
  • Keen ability to identify issues and problems, generate solutions and choose appropriate alternatives through use of user research methods
  • Familiarity with basic visual and interactive design principles and practices
  • Portfolio with work samples showcasing expertise in user research
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent collaboration and facilitation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of automotive technology and the product development lifecycle
  • Knowledge of design thinking methods
  • Familiarity with common design tools like Axure and Sketch
  • Prototyping experience (software and/or hardware development experience a plus)
  • Experience conducting user research in SAFe / Agile software development environment
  • Knowledge of user research tools such as Usertesting.com and Qualtrics

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in HCI, Human Factors, Product Design, Psychology or related. Master’s Degree preferred
