About the RSC

The Royal Society of Chemistry is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to advance chemical sciences. As a not-for-profit publisher, we reinvest surplus funds back into the global scientific community, supporting our purpose to help the chemical science community make the world a better place.

The RSC strives to continuously innovate its product and services to adapt to market and customer needs, maintain relevancy and diversify revenues from print journals. This requires a market-led and ‘outside-in’ thinking approach to product and service innovation.

Benefits

At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we promote a healthy work/life balance and flexible working options across the organisation. We offer a comprehensive benefits package to all employees including:

  • 26 days paid holiday per annum
  • 35-hour working week with flexible options
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • Paid volunteering days
  • Pension plan with up to 12% employer contributions (depending upon your contribution)
  • Life assurance at four times basic annual salary

The role

Working within a newly established User Experience team, you will support digital product development and improve user experience by coordinating and running user research, design validation, and connecting development, product and service teams with user needs.

You will develop and share processes and best practice around quantitative and qualitative research and provide support for colleagues carrying out their own analysis.

This role helps to ensure our products and services are usable and intuitive, and that our designs and systems serve our users, by arranging, running, and analysing user research, as well as working with our Data Science and Insights team to collate and drive that knowledge out into the organisation.

Working closely with our UX Designers, the front-end development team and product managers, this role will drive and nurture user-centred design, helping to identify and validate opportunities for new product and service development, as well as user improvements in an agile software development and delivery organisation.

What we are looking for:

  • Degree level education or have equivalent experience in human behaviour related fields
  • Deep understanding of Human-centred design and Design Thinking and how they are applied to problem solving
  • Extensive experience in planning and conducting field studies and usability studies
  • You’ll be practiced at a range of user research techniques: interviews, usability tests, A/B testing
  • Ability to conduct both generative and evaluative research
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills with an ability to interpret and articulate user experience findings persuasively to a wide audience
  • Ability to develop a deep empathy and build rapport with your target users
  • Experience in creating and maintaining design personas, empathy maps and customer journey maps
  • Ability to gather, analyse and discerningly assess user data through web analytics, search and web logs, user surveys, support calls and research interviews
  • Experience validating customer value propositions
  • Any experience working in the publishing industry or with value streams would be an advantage

This role is advertised with an open end date and the candidates will be interviewed through September 2022 and if you are interested in this role, please apply.
